When I was at high school (many moons ago), I completed a questionnaire in my careers class to find out what kind of vocation would suit me, based on my interests, talents, personality etc. and the results revealed I should go for something creative. So what did I do? Well apart from a stint at the local theatre, in the marketing department (kinda creative, yes?), I ended up working (wait for it…) in an office (not creative at all!!). I went on from there to pursue a career in Human Resources which I mostly enjoyed until I left to start a business venture with my husband, Andy. We now have our own construction company of which I am the Administrations Director (don’t laugh-still not creative!).
I have, however always pursued one creative thing or another in my spare time, and when Andy and I bought a fixer upper house in 2013, I couldn’t wait to get my teeth stuck in and threw myself into the project of making our home functional and beautiful. This resulted in me receiving many compliments from friends and family about my design ideas, which was the impetus behind me starting this blog (along with my love of all things creative). I must also mention that without Andy, who is an excellent builder and carpenter, none of it would have been possible. Andy also helps me with some of my projects that require drilling, sawing, fixing etc. (you get the picture). He is also great to bounce ideas off and comes up with solutions to make things work when I get stuck (although, he does sometimes put the kibosh on my whims if they’re not possible or practical–booooo).
So, even though my career path hasn’t been particularly creative, I’ve made up for it along the way with various hobbies, including nail art, cake decorating, upcycling furniture, drawing, dancing, gardening, and writing, most of which I still dip in and out of now, and make up my world of eclectic creations. I also have a passion for interior design (as you’ve probably gathered!), which I am majorly crushing on at the moment.
